MVVS .61 (10cc)

Tom,

Tarno Cox .049 carb with Mike Salvador adapter.  I had two of these carbs.  I think one went to LA over two years ago.  I had forgotten one had a bent needle valve.

I have used this as after run oil in two stroke diesels since the late 1990's with no problems.  Also in recent years in four stroke diesels.  Also, to oil rockers in four stroke diesels.  I have  purchased it from Ace Hardware.

High temp here today in the 60's so I ran a MVVS 10 cc engine with the Davis diesel head. I do not think this engine was run before today. Tarno 1/2 A R/C carb and Aerodyne fuel. Uni-Flow fuel tank. First run the exhaust was brown. The rest of the runs were honey color. Much faster break in comparison to the old iron and steel diesels. Years ago, I asked Davis for a head for the MVVS 10 cc engine. He said loosen the head bolts and send him the engine which I did. It has sat in the box with the Davis head until today. I took the Tarno carb and Mike Salvador carb adapter from the MVVS I got from Bob Slater. The one from Bob Slater now has a MVVS .40-.45 R/C carb. Next time running diesels I will run Bob's engine with the .40-.45 carb. I have been told this will work as well as the Tarno for Texaco. Some folks have had problems with the Tarno carb.

Last week I ran a Drone diesel.  Today I ran an MVVS 10 cc with a 1/2A R/C carb set up for Texaco.  Cloudy and cool, with high temp: 46 degrees.  No problem as diesels like cool weather.  I got this MVVS 10 cc diesel from Bob Slater after his health was failing.  For a couple years after flying in the SWR SAM contest  at Eloy I would spend some days at Bob's house running diesels.  We also flew models on the Indian reservation close to Bob's house.  Much nicer weather in Arizona in January than here in Northern Illinois.  One year it was the MVVS with a 1/2A carb and adapter for the carb made by Mike Salvador for Bob that we ran on Bob's test stand.  We could get very good engines runs with this set up around 20 minutes at the RPM that would fly a Bomber.

Today I ran this engine at much higher RPM (4,400 to 4.500) on an 18/12 prop.  Stock Aerodyne diesel fuel.  With this prop, my heavy 9 pound 7 ounce with Laser on a 1600 sq. in. Airborn takes off at 3,100 and cruises at 2,500 to 2,600rpm.  This is due to the high pitch and large diameter of the prop.  At 4,400 RPM, with an 18/12 prop, the big MVVS is rock steady.  At the RPMs Bob was running in Arizona with this engine, it was a bit tricky to get steady runs.  At 4,400 t0 4,500 run times on 28 cc was a bit less than 9 minutes.  A full size Bomber or my 1600 Airborn would probably be out of sight in nine minutes with this set up.

It took me some time yesterday in the garage locating the engine and other hardware to run this engine.  I could not find the clear plastic tubing extension for the muffler to dump the exhaust out the back of the test stand.  Also I could not find the push rod to control the carb with the handle on the test stand.  So, I had to make up a new push rod.  Looking for these items I did find something lost for years.  A brand new MVVS 10 cc with a Davis Diesel head.  See 2nd photo.  I sent the engine with the head bolts loose per Bob Davis to get him to make the head.  Some folks have had a contra piston on the MVVS drop and I wanted this head just in case.  The grass is starting to green up as seen in  the photo

A Texaco Foote Westerner (scaled up A version) Part 1

Several years ago, this 'A' Westerner was scaled up with two fuselages by John Hatch of Canada. The first fuselage was to permit the model to be flown in the Ohlsson .23 event and was therefore fitted with an O&R23 sideport. Subsequent rule changes would forbid scaling of models for this event so the fuselage remained unused in my basement for some time.

The model was flown, however, in 'A Texaco' fitted with an Mvvs .15 and the sliding/fuel line disconnect mechanism seen attached to the engine lug. The model would get so high that this was employed every time it was flown even though we were using, by now, the smaller 8cc tank.

At the 2006 SAM Champs, the model was hit by radio interference and made an abrupt hammerhead from about 500ft into the pavement after an otherwise very docile climb out.

The O&R fuselage was refitted with the Mvvs .15 and a new wing (this time the approved extended wing) was framed up by Bucky Walter which awaits covering. The original construction is a little too flimsy for iron on films, so F.X. Ryan has added the diagonals seen above. The model will also be equipped with a new Spektrum 2.4 gHZ receiver this time.

Note also that there were three distinct Foote Westerners in the Old Timer period (the Foote Racer and Soarer are nostalgia models). This one differs from the more common 'C' Westerner seen here and here which has been scaled up and down in the following ways:

1. Higher aspect ratio wing (in either length)
2. Thinner airfoil
3. Undercambered stabilizer
4. Taller fin
